Author – Padmini Madhav, 85

Introduction:

Music plays an important role in shaping people’s moods, preferences and cultural connections. Punjabi music, in particular has gained immense popularity among audiences due to its energetic beats and diverse styles. This survey is conducted to understand listener preferences and identify the most popular Punjabi artists among audiences. It focuses on selected artists to analyse how music tastes vary across different listeners and to gain insights into current trends in Punjabi music.

Objective:

To compare the perceived ratings of four Punjabi artists – Sidhu Moose Wala, Diljit Dosanjh, AP Dhillon and Karan Aujla – using One-Way ANOVA.

Literature review:

Music Preference and Personality

A study by Sudarsan C.K. and Dr. Manjeet Singh (2023) examined the relationship between music preferences and personality traits among young adults in India. The research categorized music into different types such as energetic, rhythmic, and conventional, and linked them with personality traits like extraversion and openness. The findings revealed that individuals tend to prefer music that reflects their personality and lifestyle.

Music Preference and Emotional Influence

Research by Chauhan & Bhatt (2024) explored the relationship between emotional regulation and music preferences among young adults. The study found that individuals choose music based on emotional needs and different genres influence mood, behaviour and psychological responses. Music plays a significant role in emotional expression and well-being.

Data Collection:

A survey was conducted to understand the preferences of listeners towards selected Punjabi artists. The data was collected through a structured questionnaire using Google Forms. Respondents were asked to rate four artists based on their personal preferences. The collected data was then analysed using statistical tools such as One-Way ANOVA to identify differences in popularity among the artists. This study provides insights into listener choices and current trends in Punjabi music.
