Topic: From Pages to Screens: A Daily Shift Away from Reading

Authors:  Kanak Singh , Darshil Shah

Introduction

·       In earlier times, reading newspapers, books & novels was a common daily habit that helped people stay informed & build concentration. Today, with the increasing use of smartphones & Digital platforms, most information is accessed through screens rather than printed material. Among MBA students, the ship from pages to screens reflects changing routines, time constraints & a growing dependence on quick digital content in everyday life.

Objective of the Study

·       To understand the underlying phenomena of a shift from pages to screens.

Literature Review

  • Reichle, E., & Yu, L. (2024): The study states that reading on screens is less effective than reading on paper for understanding and retaining information. It highlights that digital reading often leads to distraction and reduced concentration.
  •  Kong, Y., et al. (2018): This meta-analysis finds that reading on paper results in better comprehension compared to screen reading. However, it notes that reading speed does not differ significantly between the two formats.

Data Collection

To understand the underlying phenomena of above problem, 5 five questions were framed on Likert scale.

1.     I spend more time on screens than reading newspapers, books or novels.

2.     I prefer short digital content over reading, printed or long written material.

3.     I find it difficult to maintain focus while reading books or newspapers.

4.     I feel my habit of regular reading has reduced because of screen usage.

5.     I believe, replacing reading with Screen Time has affected my knowledge &  concentration.

Students of ITM College were surveyed with Google forms which was framed on Linear Scale. 100 students were surveyed for each question mean, standard deviation, standard error & T stat was calculated.

As the T-STAT >1.96 in all the 5 Statements. Therefore, all the statements are positively accepted, indicating a statistically significant agreement among MBA students. This confirm that screen usage has a noticeable impact on reading habits, focus & concentration.

Conclusion

  • MBA students do spend more time on screens than reading newspapers, books or novels.
  • MBA students prefer short digital content over reading printed or long textual material.
  • Students find it difficult to maintain focus while reading books or newspapers.
