Introduction

Social media is widely used by students for communication and entertainment. Although it offers easy access to information, excessive use often leads to distraction during studies. Frequent notifications and multitasking reduce students’ ability to concentrate. This study analyzes the impact of social media usage on students’ concentration during studies.

 Objective of the Study

• To study the relationship between social media usage and students’ concentration during studies

• To measure the impact of social media usage on concentration levels

• To examine whether social media usage is statistically significant in explaining changes in students’ concentration

Literature Review

A study by Rosen, Lim, Smith, and Smith (2014) found that frequent use of social networking sites during study hours negatively affects students’ attention span and academic focus. The study concluded that multitasking with social media reduces cognitive performance and concentration.

Data Collection

Primary data for the study was collected using a structured Google Form questionnaire. The questionnaire was circulated among students, and a total of 120 valid responses were received. The questions were designed to capture students’ social media usage patterns and their concentration levels during studies. The collected data was compiled, coded, and analyzed using appropriate statistical tools to examine the impact of social media usage on students’ concentration.

Data Analysis

Decision Rules Based on t-Statistic

• Accept: If t-stat is more than +1.95, the result is significant and the statement is accepted.

Reject: If t-stat is less than −1.95, the result is significant but negative, so the statement is rejected.

• Neutral: If t-stat lies between −1.95 and +1.95, the result is not significant and is considered neutral.

Questions

1) I use social media daily while studying or completing academic tasks.

Here , T statistics is 4.145     . Here as it is greater than 1.95 . We accept it .

2 )I find it difficult to concentrate on my studies after using social media.

Here , T statistics is 3.469 . Since Here as it is greater than 1.95 . We accept it .

3)I get distracted by social media notifications during study time.

Here , T statistics is 4.443. Since Here as it is greater than 1.95 . We accept it .

4)I feel that excessive social media usage reduces my academic focus.

Here , T statistics is 5.33. *Since Here as it is greater than 1.95 . We *accept it . *

5) I believe limiting my social media usage would improve my concentration while studying.

Here , T statistics is 8.639 . Since Here as it is greater than 1.95 . We accept it .

Interpretation

Based on the t-test results, the t-statistic values for all five questions are greater than 1.95. This indicates that all the statements are statistically significant. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected and all the questions are accepted. This shows that social media usage has a significant impact on students’ concentration during studies.

 Conclusion

Since the coefficient of social media usage is negative and statistically significant, it can be concluded that excessive social media usage adversely affects students’ concentration during studies. Therefore, students should limit social media usage during study hours to improve focus and academic performance.
