INTRODUCTION:
In this era of advanced technology, social media platforms have seamlessly integrated into our daily routines, with Instagram emerging as a prominent and influential choice among young adults and students. While Instagram provides numerous avenues for self-expression, communication, and connectivity, it also harbours a paradoxical nature: the capacity to become a significant source of distraction. The primary objective of this survey is to explore the complex interplay between students’ engagement with Instagram and their encounters with procrastination when it comes to their academic pursuits.
OBJECTIVE:
To understand the underlying phenomenon of the experience of students in procrastination in studies linked to their instagram usage.
LITERATURE REVIEW:
1. Connection between problematic social media use and academic procrastination.
Kurajda, D., & Doktorova, and D.,the relationship between problematic Internet use and academic procrastination, specifically among adolescents aged 17 to 20. The researchers conducted interviews with five participants and administered two questionnaires: the Procrastination Scale for Student Population (PSS) and the Problematic and Risky Internet Use Screening Scale (PRIUSS). Their findings suggest that social media usage may not lead to academic procrastination unless it reaches problematic levels. The study highlights how participants used the Internet to avoid academic tasks, demonstrating a connection between problematic Internet use and academic procrastination among students.
Academic procrastination, characterised by voluntarily postponing academic responsibilities, negatively impacts students’ academic performance and well-being. It has been linked to anxiety and task avoidance. Research also shows that academic procrastination can vary based on personality traits and life circumstances. Studies have reported that a significant percentage of students engage in procrastination, and factors such as academic level, age, and gender can contribute to its prevalence. While some studies indicate gender differences, others suggest that procrastination is a challenge for both male and female students.
- Foroughi, B., Griffiths, M. D., Iranmanesh, M., & Salamzadeh, Y.explored the relationships between Instagram addiction, academic performance, depression, social anxiety, and life satisfaction. It found that recognition needs, social needs, and entertainment needs contributed to Instagram addiction, while information needs did not. Physical activity moderated the impact of social and entertainment needs on Instagram addiction. Additionally, Instagram addiction was associated with lower academic performance and increased social anxiety and depression. Academic performance positively influenced life satisfaction, while social anxiety and depression had negative effects on students’ life satisfaction. These findings offer insights into the causes and consequences of Instagram addiction among students and highlight the concerns regarding social networking site (SNS) addiction’s impact on academic achievement, emphasising the need for balance in students’ SNS use.
