Topic – A Comparative Study of Student Ratings of Selected laptop brands Using One-Way ANOVA
Author – Kanak Singh
Introduction
Laptops play a vital role in students’ academic and personal activities. With multiple brands available in the market, students often rate laptops based on performance, reliability, and overall user experience. This study compares student ratings of HP, Lenovo, Dell & Mac laptops using One-Way ANOVA to identify differences in user preference.
Objectives of the Study
· To understand the underlying phenomena of problem
Literature Review
1. Mishra and Shyam Shah (2020) examined consumer brand preferences for laptops and found that brand image, price, and key features significantly influence consumer choice and preference among laptop brands.
2. Ranjith & Goyal (2011) conducted a study on consumer perception of laptops and reported that lifestyle and user priorities such as performance, portability, and battery life impact brand preference in the laptop market.
Data Collection
· Type of Data: Primary data
- Method: Questionnaire (Google forms)
- Sample Size: 40
- Scale Used: Rating scale (1 to 10)
- Sampling Technique: Convenience sampling
Data Analysis
· Statistical Tool Used: One-Way ANOVA (Single Factor)
· Purpose: To test whether the mean ratings of HP, Lenovo, Dell & Mac laptops differ significantly.

· The calculated F-value is 30.94, which is significantly higher than the critical F-value of 2.66.
· The p-value (9.49 × 10⁻¹⁶) is much lower than the significance level of 0.05.
· Since p-value < 0.05, the null hypothesis (H₀) stating that all laptop brands have equal mean ratings is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) is accepted.
Conclusion
· The One-Way ANOVA results indicate that there is a statistically significant difference in student ratings among the selected laptop brands. Among the 4 brands, Mac received the highest average rating, followed by Dell, Lenovo, and HP. This suggests that students perceive Mac laptops as superior in terms of overall performance and user satisfaction compared to the other brands.
