INTRODUCTION: In the present digital era, mobile phones have become an indispensable part of students’ daily lives. They provide quick access to communication, online learning platforms, and academic resources. However, the increasing use of smartphones during lectures and study hours has raised concerns about their impact on students’ concentration. Frequent notifications, social media usage, and entertainment applications often distract students, leading to reduced focus and ineffective learning.
Excessive mobile phone usage can negatively influence students’ academic behavior, including poor time management, procrastination, and decreased classroom engagement. Many students also experience anxiety or restlessness when they are unable to use their mobile phones, indicating a growing dependence on these devices. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of mobile phone usage on students’ concentration and academic behavior, and to highlight the need for responsible mobile phone use in educational settings.
OBJECTIVE:
To examine the impact of mobile phone usage on students’ concentration and academic behavior.
LITERATURE REVIEW:
Several studies indicate that excessive mobile phone usage among students leads to reduced concentration and increased academic distraction. Researchers have found that frequent phone checking during lectures and study hours negatively affects attention span and learning efficiency.
Other studies highlight the psychological impact of mobile phone dependency, linking it to anxiety, poor time management, and procrastination. The literature suggests that uncontrolled mobile phone use can adversely influence students’ academic behavior and performance.
DATA COLLECTION:
To understand the underlying of the above problem 5 questions were framed on likert scale
Q1 I feel distracted during my studies because of frequent mobile phone use.
Q2 I use my mobile phone during lectures or classes.
Q3 I find it hard to concentrate on academic work without checking my phone.
Q4 I feel anxious or restless when I am unable to use my mobile phone.
Q5 I spend more time on my mobile phone than I initially intend to.
Students of ITM College were surveyed which were framed on likert scale. 100 students were surveyed. For each question mean, Standard deviation, Standard error and t-stat were calculated.
DATA ANALYSIS:
Conclusion :
1. The study finds a significant impact of mobile phone usage on students’ concentration, as indicated by the rejection of the null hypothesis for the first statement (t = –2.15).
2. Most other statements show neutral results, suggesting that while mobile phone use is common, its overall impact on academic behavior is not strongly perceived by all students.
3. The mean values close to 3 indicate mixed opinions among students, reflecting varying levels of mobile phone dependence and usage patterns.
4. Moderate standard deviation values highlight individual differences in mobile phone usage, indicating the need for balanced and responsible smartphone use in academic settings.
