A Survey on Stress

Introduction Stress is a complex psychological and physiological response that occurs when individuals perceive demands as exceeding their coping resources. The study of stress integrates concepts from cognition, emotion, and behavior to explain how people perceive stressors, emotionally respond to them, and behave under pressure. This paper provides a comprehensive understanding of stress by linking mental processes, emotional reactions, and behavioral outcomes, highlighting its importance in health, performance, and well-being.

Objectives To understand the underlying phenomenon of stress

 

Literature Review

Fink, G. (2016) Stress significantly influences cognitive functioning, emotional stability, and behavioral responses. Prolonged or unmanaged stress can impair decision-making, increase emotional distress, and lead to maladaptive behaviors. Understanding the interaction between cognition, emotion, and behavior helps in developing effective stress-management strategies and interventions to improve mental health and overall quality of life.

Sonnentag, S., & Frese, M. (2003) Organizational stress has profound effects on employees’ physical health, psychological well-being, and job performance. Empirical evidence shows that prolonged exposure to workplace stressors leads to negative outcomes such as burnout, absenteeism, reduced commitment, and increased health costs. The paper concludes that managing stress through organizational interventions—such as reducing stressors and increasing employee resources—is essential for promoting employee well-being and enhancing overall organizational effectiveness

Data Collection – To understand the underlying issues of stress. The Following 5 questions are framed on Likert scale (5-point scale). A google form was framed with linear scale 1 to 5. Data was coded as 5 for strongly agree, 4 for agree, 3 for neutral, 2 for disagree and 1 for strongly disagree. 100 students of ITM were surveyed and data was downloaded as excel sheet. For each question mean, standard deviation, standard error and t statistics was calculated.

All the t stats values are more than 1.96 so people agree with all the statements.

Conclusion

People feel mentally stressed due to academic or work responsibilities.

People find that mental stress affects their ability to concentrate on tasks

People feel pressure to meet expectations from family, society, or workplace

People notice that stress affects their mood

People feel worried or anxious often.
