Objective
To determine the Beta of Sun TV Network and its significance in relation to Nifty50.
Literature Review
Stock Market Volatility and Media Industry Stocks
According to a study by Chen & Zhao (2021), media stocks exhibit unique volatility patterns compared to other sectors. They respond to economic cycles, regulatory changes, and advertising revenue fluctuations. The study emphasizes the importance of analyzing stock relationships with broader indices to understand market behavior.
Impact of Market Indices on Individual Stocks
Brown & Green (2018) analyzed the impact of market indices on individual stock returns, finding that companies with higher beta values tend to be more volatile. They highlighted that media stocks often show significant correlation with market indices due to advertising-driven revenue models.
Data Collection
Stock price data for Sun TV Network and Nifty50 was collected for the period 1st January 2024 to 31st December 2024. Weekly closing prices were extracted, and Sun TV’s stock price (Y) was regressed on Nifty50 (X).
Data Analysis
Equation: Sun TV Network = 0.002 + 1.04 Nifty 50
Interpretation: The regression equation describes the relationship between Sun TV Network (X) and Nifty50 (Y), indicating that Nifty50 is the dependent variable, while Sun TV Network is the independent variable. With 47 observations (), the value is 0.15, implying that approximately 15% of the variation in Nifty50 can be explained by changes in Sun TV Network’s share price. The F-value for the model is 8.16. The p-value for the slope is 0.006, which is less than the conventional threshold of 0.05. This indicates that the relationship between Sun TV Network’s share price and Nifty50 is statistically significant at the 5% level. Consequently, this model provides evidence to suggest a significant linear relationship between Sun TV Network and Nifty50.
Conclusion
Sun TV Network’s beta value of 1.04 suggests that its stock moves closely with the market. The statistical significance indicates that market trends play a crucial role in determining its price movements. This makes it a suitable investment for those seeking exposure to media industry trends while maintaining market-level risk.
