Introduction :
Titan Company Limited is a leading Indian lifestyle brand known for its watches, jewelry, eyewear, and other accessories. Founded in 1984 as a joint venture between the Tata Group and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), Titan has become one of the most trusted and recognized names in the retail sector. With a focus on innovation and customer satisfaction, Titan has successfully expanded its product portfolio and market reach.
Objective:
The objective of this study is to determine the beta value of Titan Company Limited relative to the Nifty 50 index. Beta measures the stock’s volatility compared to the market. This analysis will help investors assess the risk associated with Titan’s stock and make informed investment decisions.
Literature Review:
1.A study by Sharma and Verma (2023) analyzed the relationship between retail sector stocks and market indices. It found that companies with strong brand recognition and market dominance tend to have lower volatility compared to other sectors.
2.According to a report by Economic Times (2024), Titan’s stock performance is largely influenced by consumer spending trends, festive demand, and brand loyalty. The analysis indicated a moderate correlation between Titan and the Nifty 50 index.
Data Collection:
Data for Titan Company Limited and Nifty 50 was downloaded for the period from 1st January 2024 to 31st December 2024. The data was manipulated to calculate the Friday closing prices for both indices. The Nifty 50 was represented as X and Titan Company Limited as Y. A linear regression analysis was performed where Y was regressed on X.
Data Analysis:
The regression equation: Y = 0.951 + 0.085X. This describes the relationship between the Nifty 50 (X) and the Titan Company Ltd share price (Y), indicating that Titan Company Ltd share price is the dependent variable. The positive coefficient of 0.085 suggests that for every unit increase in Nifty 50, the share price of Titan Company Ltd is expected to increase by 0.085 units. With 47 observations (N = 47), the model’s R-squared value is 0.0019, indicating that 0.19% of the variation in Titan Company Ltd share price can be explained by changes in the Nifty 50. The remaining 99.81% is attributed to other factors not included in the model. The p-value for the slope is 0.0030, which is less than 0.05. This indicates that the relationship between the Nifty 50 and Titan Company Ltd share price is statistically significant at the 5% level. Hence, the model provides strong evidence of a significant linear relationship between Nifty 50 and Titan Company Ltd share price, suggesting that market movements have a meaningful impact on the company’s stock price.
Conclusion:
Since the Beta (0.085) is less than 1, it indicates that Titan Company Limited is not preferable for short-term investment.
