1)The mental health consequences of globalisation

Antonia Lopez Villavicencio, 2019. This study examines the impact of globalization on mental health across countries, focusing on depression and anxiety. While trade globalization reduces mental health disorders, social globalization—such as cultural exchange and media openness—leads to higher mental distress. The findings suggest that globalization affects mental health beyond labor market changes, with social factors playing a major role in increased mental health challenges.

2)Legalized Sports Betting and Mental Health

Brad R. Humphreys. This study examines the impact of legalized sports betting on mental health using data from 2013 to 2022. After the 2018 Supreme Court ruling, 38 states and D.C. legalized sports betting. Analysis shows that increased access to betting worsens mental health, with more people reporting bad mental health days and depressive disorders. These findings highlight potential risks of legalized gambling, helping stakeholders assess its impact on public well-being.

3)Mental Health Problems and Needs among Transitional-Age Youth in Indonesia

Fransiska Kaligis & All 2021. This study examines mental health issues among Indonesian transitional-age youth (16–24 years old). Anxiety was the most common problem (95.4%), with financial, academic, and loneliness issues affecting over 90% of students. While most had positive coping strategies (90–96.4%), about 50% reported self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Key expectations from mental health services included confidentiality and a welcoming approach (99.2%). The study provides insights to improve mental health support for this group.

4)Cannabis Use and Mental Health Problems

Jan C. van Ours & Jenny Williams (2009): This study examines the impact of cannabis use on mental health while accounting for unobserved factors that influence both. The findings indicate that cannabis use increases the likelihood of mental health issues, with current use having a stronger effect than past use. Additionally, the study identifies a dose-response relationship, where more frequent cannabis consumption correlates with a higher probability of experiencing mental health problems.

5)Mental Health in Adolescents

Lubhana Malik Mental (2019): Adolescents, at the cusp of adulthood, go through a lot of changes, not just hormonal but emotional and psychological as well. These include various difficulties and burdens that interfere with adolescent development and may adversely affect their quality of life intervention socially and vocationally. Mental health problems have important implications for every aspect of a young person’s life, including his/her ability to engage with education, make and keep friends, have constructive family relationships, and/or make his/her way in the world. Thus, prevention and intervention in adolescence are critical for well-being, especially to be able to have a healthy transition into adulthood.

6)Perceived Social Barriers In Accessing Mental Health Care From a Mental Hospital

Priyanka Singh, 2017. This study explores social barriers to accessing mental health care in a mental hospital in Uttar Pradesh. Using qualitative analysis of data from 30 respondents (patients and providers), the research identifies key obstacles such as stigma, gender discrimination, beliefs about mental illness, negative societal attitudes, and mistrust toward mental hospitals and providers. The study highlights the need for government-led educational programs to raise awareness and improve mental health service accessibility.

7)Mental Health Problems in Culturally Changing Adivasi Communities

R.C. Mishra, 2015. This study examines the mental health of Adivasi communities in India, highlighting their social exclusion and challenges in integrating with mainstream society despite development programs. Research across different economic groups reveals a general inclination toward integration, though some experience marginalization. Mental health is influenced by acculturation and various moderating factors. The study suggests that reducing stress and mental health issues among Adivasis requires development programs that promote cultural integration and participation.

8)A New Priority for Mental Health

Richard Layard, 2015. The briefing highlights that mental illness, particularly depression and chronic anxiety, is the leading cause of misery in advanced countries. However, only 25% of affected individuals receive treatment. Mental health is essential for overall well-being, and there are modern, evidence-based treatments available that do not impose additional costs on the government.

The analysis explores the key factors influencing societal well-being and examines low-cost methods for improving mental health, especially in situations where financial resources are limited. It also reviews the progress made in providing mental health treatment and evaluates the plans proposed by major political parties to sustain and expand these services.

9)Estimating Local Prevalence of Mental Health Problems

Steven Stern, 2011. The provision of mental health services is undergoing significant changes due to the impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) on healthcare access and costs. State policymakers face difficult decisions in balancing budgets while ensuring adequate public medical care, including mental health services. Despite these challenges, mental health care constitutes only a small portion of overall healthcare costs. The study highlights the evolving nature of mental health service provision and the financial constraints that influence policy decisions.

10)The Mental Health Education Of College Students

Ziwei Zhang, 2021. This study examines the mental health issues of college students and their impact on families and society. It explores causes from individual, family, college, and societal perspectives. Solutions include enhancing self-awareness, improving family education, strengthening college psychological support, and fostering a positive public opinion environment. These efforts aim to promote students’ mental well-being and support China’s modernization.

CONCLUSION

Mental health issues impact individuals across different age groups and societies, affecting education, relationships, and overall well-being. Adolescents and college students face challenges due to emotional, academic, and social pressures, while marginalized communities struggle with cultural integration and social exclusion. Substance use, legalized gambling, and social globalization contribute to worsening mental health conditions. Barriers such as stigma, discrimination, and mistrust further limit access to care. Policy changes like the Affordable Care Act (ACA) influence service provision, but financial constraints persist. Addressing mental health requires early intervention, cultural sensitivity, awareness programs, and policy support to ensure accessible and effective care.
