Introduction: –
Living in a hostel can be an exciting and enriching experience for students, offering
independence, community, and opportunities for personal growth. However, it can also come
with its own set of challenges. This survey aims to understand the problems faced by
students residing in hostels, with the goal of identifying key areas for improvement and
advocating for positive change.
Through this research We want to hear about all the good, bad, and everything in between! By
sharing the student’s honest feedback on internet connectivity, noise levels, water availability,
shared washrooms, and the hostel mess.
Objectives: –
To understand the underlying phenomenon of the survey to
● Identify the most common problems.
● Gain insights into the severity and impact of these problems on students’ well-being,
academic performance, and overall hostel experience
● Gather feedback on specific aspects of hostel life, such as facilities, regulations, social
dynamics.
● Identify potential solutions to address the identified problems and improve the overall
quality of hostel life for students.

Data Collection: –
In order to understand the Problems faced by students residing in Hostels, an online survey was conducted among college students living in Hostel. There were 5 questions in the google survey form which was focusing on the key aspects of hostel life that have the potential to impact student well-being such as Internet Connectivity, Noise disturbances, water availability, shared washroom comfort, satisfaction with mess food.
The survey was open to college students, but responses were specifically requested from those residing in Hostel. The total of 106 responses were obtained from the survey. Data was collected on a linear scale, allowing for statistical analysis to calculate Mean, Standard Deviation, Standard Error, and Z – Statistics.
Calculated Mean, Standard Deviation, Standard Error, and Z – Statistics for each question are as follows: –
Q. N o. (1)My Internet needs are satisfied by the Hostel Wi-Fi. mean = 2.849057, standard deviation = 1.385589, standard error = 0.13458, Z -Statistic = 1.121586
Q. No. (2) Noise from my roommates doesn’t disrupt my sleep and study. mean = 2.773585, standard deviation = 1.462438, standard error = 0.142045, Z -Statistic = 1.593973
Q. No. (3) Water supply in Hostel is sufficient for my daily routine. mean = 3.367925, standard deviation = 1.396086, standard error = 0.1356, Z -Statistic = -2.71331
Q. No. (4) I feel at ease using the shared washroom. mean = 2.801887, standard deviation = 1.333951, standard error = 0.129565, Z -Statistic = 1.529067
Q. No. (5) Meals served in the Hostel meets my dietary needs and taste. mean = 2.254717, standard deviation = 1.359701, standard error = 0.132066, Z -Statistic = -1.92871201
Data Analysis: –
This research investigated the problems faced by students living in hostels by analysing data collected through an online Google survey form. The survey consisted of five questions related to various aspects of hostel life, including internet access, noise levels, water supply, shared washroom facilities, and meal satisfaction.
● Internet access: – The mean score for internet satisfaction was 2.849, with a standard deviation of 1.386. This suggests that, on average, students were moderately satisfied with the hostel Wi-Fi. However, the standard deviation indicates a wide range of individual experiences, with some students reporting significant issues with internet connectivity.
● Noise Disturbance: – The mean score for noise disruption was 2.774, with a standard deviation of 1.462. This suggests that, on average, noise from roommates did not significantly disrupt students’ sleep and study. However, as with internet access, the standard deviation indicates that some students were more affected by noise than other.
● Water Supply: – The mean score for water supply adequacy was 3.368, with a standard deviation of 1.396. This suggests that, on average, students are satisfied with the availability of water for their daily needs. However, the standard deviation indicates that some students may have experienced occasional water shortages or disruptions.
● Shared Washroom Comfort: – The mean score for washroom ease of use was 2.802, with a standard deviation of 1.334. This suggests that, on average, students were moderately comfortable using the shared washrooms. However, as with the other factors, the standard deviation indicates that some students may have had negative experiences with the shared facilities.
● Meal Satisfaction: – The mean score for meal satisfaction was 2.255, with a standard deviation of 1.360. This suggests that, on average, students were not particularly satisfied with the meals served in the hostel mess. The relatively low mean score and high standard deviation indicate that many students found the meals to be inadequate in terms of taste, variety, or dietary needs. Also, Standard Error is below 0.15 for all the questions ask to the respondents, which shows that sample means provide reasonably accurate estimates of the population means with a good level of confidence. All These analyses highlight several areas where improvements could be made to enhance the hostel living experience for students. Addressing issues with internet connectivity, noise levels, and meal quality could significantly improve student satisfaction and well-being. Additionally, providing more comfortable and accessible shared washroom facilities could further contribute to a positive hostel environment. Conclusion: – Here we are concluding our research on the basis of Z-Statistics value of each question which are as follows:
● Internet Satisfaction: – Z -Statistics for internet satisfaction is 1.121586 which shows a neutral response to the question about internet satisfaction. This means that students are neither particularly satisfied nor dissatisfied with the Hostel Wi-Fi.
● Noise from Roommates: – Z -Statistics for this question is 1.593973 which shows the neutral response to the question about noise from roommates. This mean that noise from roommates is not a major problem for most students.
● Water supply sufficiency: – Z -Statistics for this question is -2.71331 which shows a negative response to the question about water supply sufficiency. This means that students are not satisfied with the water supply in the Hostel.
● Shared washroom ease of use: – Z -Statistics for this question is 1.529067 which shows a neutral response to the question which means the students are neither particularly comfortable nor uncomfortable using the shared washrooms.
● Meal satisfaction: – Z -Statistics for this question is -1.92871201 which shows the positive response to the question about meal satisfaction which means students are satisfied with the meal served in the Hostel mess. Overall, the study suggests that students have mixed experiences with hostel living. Some aspects, such as internet access and noise from roommates, do not appear to be major problems. However, other aspects, such as water supply and shared washroom facilities, could be improved. The negative response to meal satisfaction is suggesting that hostel mess should provide students with nutritious and enjoyable meals.
