Jaguar Land Rover defective timing chains class action lawsuit settlement

Jaguar agreed to a timing chain payment in order to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging that some of its Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles had faulty timing chains. The settlement will start to help current and former buyers of Land Rover LR4 and Range Rover Sport cars from the model years 2012 to 2014 on August 6, 2021. Jaguar’s Land Rover vehicles are advertised as high end SUVs that can cross “any ecosystem” and “push every possible barrier,” according to the company website. Some Land Rover models start at above $100,000. Timing chain issues in Land Rover vehicles may have caused consumers to overpay despite these high pricing.

Timing chains for Land Rover and Range Rover Sport cars were reportedly marketed with defects from 2012 to 2014, claim the owners in the Jaguar class action lawsuit. The timing chain of a car allows engine valves to open, releasing exhaust while letting gas and air in. The timing chain issue in Land Rovers is said to be the cause of the cars’ alleged early engine failure. According to the claim, the defect may lead to failure of the timing chains, chain tensioners, tensioner levers, and possibly the entire engine. Due to this malfunction, drivers allegedly had to pay for expensive repairs. Despite without admitting any wrongdoing, Jaguar has decided to settle this court case.

In the sixth year or between 50,000 and 70,000 miles, up to 60% of the cost of timing chain repairs will be reimbursed. Timing chain repairs completed between 70,001 and 95,000 miles or in the seventh year will be partly refunded. Between 85,001 and 100,000 miles or the ninth year, up to 40% of timing chain repairs will be reimbursed. Timing chain repairs after eight years or 100,000 miles are not covered by insurance. The timing chain repair reimbursement has a maximum payment of $4,000. With a maximum payout of $8,000, up to 30% of engine repairs completed in the sixth year or between 50,001 and 70,000 kilometers would be reimbursed.

A maximum payout of $6,500 would be given for up to 25% of engine repairs completed in the seventh year or between 70,001 and 95,000 kilometers. With a maximum payout of $5,000, up to 20% of engine repairs completed in the eighth year or between 85,001 and 100,000 kilometers would be covered. The Jaguar Land Rover timing chain settlement also includes an extension of the warranty for timing chains and engine damage. The deadline for objections and exclusions is January 18, 2022. Class members have 90 days from the date of final approval to submit claims. Based on the scheduled date of the final approval hearing, June 9, 2022, is the final claim deadline for the timing chain settlement.
