Introduction:

Understanding derivatives can be a challenging task for many individuals, as it involves concepts and mathematical techniques that may seem complex and abstract at first glance. Derivatives are a fundamental concept in calculus and play a crucial role in various fields, including mathematics, physics, economics, and finance. The challenge of comprehending derivatives arises from the intricacies involved in grasping both their theoretical foundations and practical applications. 

Literature Review:

The literature review on the challenge of comprehending derivatives encompasses a broad range of perspectives, including financial, mathematical, educational, and cognitive aspects. Derivatives, such as options and futures contracts, are financial instruments whose values are derived from an underlying asset. Understanding and trading derivatives involves complex mathematical models, risk assessments, and a deep comprehension of financial markets. Derivative markets vary across regions, and global perspectives are crucial in understanding the challenges associated with comprehending derivatives. Comparative studies examine differences in regulatory frameworks, market structures, and trading practices.Researchers analyze the implications of technological advancements on market dynamics, trading strategies, and risk management.

 

Data Collection:

A set of 5 Likert scale questions was created, and a survey was conducted with 100 individuals from the college.

1. Do you know the fundamental applications of derivatives.
2. I am able to distinguish between more complicated functions using the chain rule and product rule.
3. The distinction between the average and instantaneous rates of change is clear to me.
4. The usage of mathematical terminology in derivatives baffles me.
5. I understand how derivatives relate to a graph’s slope.

 

They were coded as: Strongly Agree-1, Agree-2, Neutral-3, Strongly Disagree-4, Disagree-5

 

Data Analysis:

1. MEAN= 2.93   SD= 1.11   SE= 0.11   T-STAT= 0.63
2. MEAN= 3.01   SD= 1.17   SE= 0.12   T-STAT= 0.09
3. MEAN= 2.96   SD= 1.15   SE= 0.12   T-STAT= 0.35
4. MEAN= 2.76   SD= 1.08   SE= 0.11   T-STAT= -2.21
5. MEAN= 2.6     SD= 1.12   SE= 0.11   T-STAT= 3.57

 

Conclusion:

1. Do you know the fundamental applications of derivatives.
    T-stat is –0.63 which is between 1.96 and –1.96. It means people are neutral with the statement.

 

2. I am able to distinguish between more complicated functions using the chain rule and product rule.
T-stat is 0.09 which is between 1.96 and –1.96. It means people are neutral with the statement.

 

3. The distinction between the average and instantaneous rates of change is clear to me.
   T-stat is –0.35 which is between 1.96 and –1.96. It means people are neutral with the statement.

 

4. The usage of mathematical terminology in derivatives baffles me.
T-stat is -2.21 which is less than –1.96. It means people disagree with the statement.

 

5. I understand how derivatives relate to a graph’s slope.
   T-stat is –3.57 which is less than –1.96. It means people disagree with the statement.

Our aim was to understand how individuals navigate unfamiliar challenges of the derivatives market.
