It is a common issue in many public transportation systems, especially in crowded railway networks. This practice leads to financial losses for railway authorities and creates inconvenience for legitimate passengers. It also affects the management and efficiency of railway services. Studying ticketless commuting helps understand the reasons behind this behaviour and helps develop better policies to control it.

Objective: To understand the underline phenomena of “Ticketless Commuting Survey”

Literature Review:

1. Commuters’ Attitudes toward Fare Collection

Alhassan, Matthews, Toner, and Susilo (2019) examine rail commuters’ attitudes toward fare collection and ticket verification systems in public transport. The study finds that factors such as income level, travel frequency, and convenience influence passengers’ willingness to purchase tickets. It also reveals that automated ticketing systems and better monitoring mechanisms can improve passenger compliance and reduce ticketless commuting. The research emphasizes that technological advancements in ticketing and effective policy implementation can strengthen fare management in railway transport systems.

2. Fare Evasion in Public Transport Systems

Barabino, Lai, and Olivo (2020) analyse the issue of fare evasion in public transport systems across different countries. The study reviews existing research and identifies key factors influencing ticketless commuting, including passenger behaviour, economic conditions, and transport management policies. The authors highlight that fare evasion causes significant financial losses to transport authorities and affects the efficiency of railway services. The study also suggests that improved ticket verification systems and stronger enforcement strategies can help reduce ticketless travel and improve compliance among passengers.

Data Collection:

To understand the underline issues following five questions were framed to be answered on Likert scale Question:

1. I often travel without buying a ticket.

2. I intentionally find ways to avoid paying the fare.

3. I depend a lot on the possibility that I will not get caught.

4. Travelling without a ticket makes me feel guilty.

5. I should always purchase a valid ticket for my journey.

A Google form was prepared and our friends from KBS were request to fill the form which had linear scale 1 for strongly disagree and 5 for strongly agree, the data was downloaded from excel sheet, 100 people were surveyed for every question mean, SD, SE and T-Stat was calculated.

Question I often travel without buying a ticket? Traveling without a ticket makes me feel guilty? I should always purchase a valid ticket for my journey? I intentionally find ways to avoid paying the fare? People do not prefer travelling without buying a ticket.

2. People do not feel comfortable travelling without a ticket.

3. People believe that passengers should always buy a ticket before travelling.

4. People do not try to avoid paying the travel fare.

5. People believe that travelling with a valid ticket is important.

Reference:

1. Alhassan, I. B., Matthews, B., Toner, J., & Susilo, Y. O. (2019).
