Introduction<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Procrastination is a frequent challenge for students caused by poor time management, fear of failure, and digital distractions. Delaying tasks creates unnecessary stress and reduces the time available for quality work. Constant postponement often leads to missed deadlines, increased anxiety, and low self-esteem. Over time, chronic procrastination can damage academic reputation and limit career opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abstract<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Procrastination\u00a0is a pervasive self-regulatory failure characterized by the voluntary delay of intended actions despite expecting to be worse off for the delay.\u00a0\u00a0It affects approximately one-fifth of adults and half of students, negatively impacting academic performance, mental health, and overall productivity. Common consequences include stress, guilt, poor time management, and increased treatment delay for mental health issues. Research identifies procrastination as stemming from imbalanced motivations\u2014avoiding task aversiveness while undervaluing future rewards\u2014supported by theories like\u00a0Temporal Motivational Theory, which integrates expectancy, value, impulsiveness, and time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recent studies highlight\u00a0neurocognitive mechanisms, showing that non-invasive brain stimulation targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) can reduce procrastination by enhancing the perceived value of task outcomes, with effects lasting up to six months.\u00a0\u00a0Interventions such as\u00a0journaling,\u00a0abstract visualization, and\u00a0cognitive-behavioural strategies\u00a0have shown promise in fostering self-awareness, motivation, and behavioural change<\/span><\/p>\n

Literature Review<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Research on university students shows that chronic procrastination, characterized by delaying studies and performing tasks at the last minute, is associated with lower academic performance. Students who habitually avoid study tasks are more likely to achieve poor grades. Such behavioural patterns also contribute to increased stress levels and feelings of anxiety after delaying work.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>College students who use their phones for entertainment instead of studying are more likely to experience poor time management, which significantly mediates the negative impact of phone use on academic outcomes. This suggests that digital distractions can indirectly reduce learning efficiency by encouraging task avoidance. Increased stress from last-minute completion further leads to reduced concentration among students, affecting their overall productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n

To understand the underlying phenomena of the problem \u2013 Procrastination , the following questions were framed with Likert scale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Question 1 – <\/span>I delayed my studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Question 2 – <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0I do my work at the last minute.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Question 3 – <\/span>I avoid studying tasks.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Question 4 – <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0I use my phone instead of studying.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Question 5 – <\/span>I feel stressed after delaying work.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A google form was framed with the above questions on 5-point scale and responses were coded as 5 \u2013 Strongly Agree, 4 \u2013 Agree, 3 \u2013 Neutral, 2 \u2013 Disagree and 1 \u2013 Strongly Disagree. Data was downloaded as an Excel sheet and for every question, Mean, Standard Deviation, Standard Error and t-stat (z) were calculated<\/span><\/p>\n
