It was set up in 1998 by major public sector companies such as GAIL, ONGC, Indian Oil, and BPCL to ensure a steady supply of natural gas to India. The company focuses on importing and processing liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet rising energy needs. Through its LNG terminals at Dahej and Kochi, Petronet plays an important role in strengthening India\u2019s energy security and reducing dependence on traditional fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">Objective:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">Calculation of beta of ONGC and observe its significance<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"><strong>Literature Review<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">View 1 : Esha Jain , Namita Gupta , Sandeep Kumar Gupta , Hanna Davydenko (2019)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">Oil drilling and exploration support economic growth but also create environmental challenges such as deforestation and pollution. This study analyses the top five Indian oil drilling and exploration companies using Wilder\u2019s Relative Strength Index (RSI) and finds that despite environmental concerns, these firms show balanced and stable stock performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">View 2:\u00a0Kapil Shobhwani , Jai Prakash (2025)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">The study examines the nature and extent of ESG disclosure among Indian companies in the Nifty-200 index and finds a clear and consistent improvement in ESG reporting from 2019\u201320 to 2023\u201324. Environmental disclosures show the strongest progress, while social and governance areas are also steadily improving, with leading performance by Reliance Industries Ltd. and Infosys Ltd. and emerging strength from companies in the chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">Data Collection:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">The data of Nifty 50 and the data for Petronet LNG was downloaded from 01-12-2024 to 30-11-2025 form NSE India.com. This data is used for finding out the Friday closing prices for Nifty 50 and Petronet LNG . Weekly return was calculated by the formula (Yt+1-Yt)\/Yt*100 and then weekly returns of the Nifty 50 was taken as X and the equity of Petronet LNG was taken as Y. Y was regressed on X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">Data Analysis:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: Symbol\"><span style=\"font-size: 7pt;line-height: normal;font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->PETRONET Returns = 338.3961 \u2212 0.00577\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: Symbol\">\u00b7<span style=\"font-size: 7pt;line-height: normal;font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The above regression equation explains the relationship between the dependent variable (Petronet stock returns) and the independent variable (market index \/ X Variable 1) using <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"494\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">48 weekly observations<\/span><\/strong><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: Symbol\">\u00b7<span style=\"font-size: 7pt;line-height: normal;font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The coefficient of <strong data-start=\"516\" data-end=\"555\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">X Variable 1 is negative (\u22120.00577)<\/span><\/strong><b>,<\/b> indicating a <strong data-start=\"570\" data-end=\"609\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">negative but very weak relationship<\/span><\/strong> between the market index and Petronet returns. This implies that a one-unit increase in X Variable 1 leads to an average <strong data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"774\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">decrease of approximately<\/span> <\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">0.00577 units<\/span><\/strong> in Petronet returns, though the impact is very small.<\/p>\n<p><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: Symbol\">\u00b7<span style=\"font-size: 7pt;line-height: normal;font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><b>The <\/b><strong data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"903\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">t-statistic for the coefficient is \u22121.96 with a p-value of 0.0559<\/span><\/strong>, which is slightly above the 5% level of significance. This confirms that the coefficient is <strong data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1046\">not <\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">statistically significant at the 5% level<\/span><\/strong>, indicating that movements in X Variable 1 do not have a strong or reliable influence on Petronet returns.<\/p>\n<p><!-- [if !supportLists]--><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 115%;font-family: Symbol\">\u00b7<span style=\"font-size: 7pt;line-height: normal;font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <strong data-start=\"1159\" data-end=\"1187\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">R-square value of 0.0771<\/span><\/strong><b> <\/b>shows that approximately <strong data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1259\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">7.71% of the variation in<\/span> <\/strong>Petronet <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">returns<\/span><\/strong> is explained by changes in X Variable 1, reflecting <strong data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1337\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">low explanatory<\/span> power<\/strong> of the regression model. The <strong data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1428\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">F-statistic of 3.8453 with a significance value of<\/span> <\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">0.0559<\/span><\/strong> indicates that the overall regression model <b>is <\/b><strong data-start=\"1476\" data-end=\"1525\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">not statistically significant at the 5% level<\/span><\/strong>, confirming the weak linear relationship between the variables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">Conclusion:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">The regression analysis indicates a weak and statistically insignificant relationship between P<\/span>etronet<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"> stock returns and the market index (X Variable 1). The estimated beta coefficient (\u03b2 = \u22120.00577) is negative but not statistically significant (P-value = 0.0559), suggesting that we cannot confidently conclude that P<\/span>etronet<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\"> returns move in line with the overall market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">With an R\u00b2 value of 0.0771, only 7.71%<b> <\/b>of the variation in P<\/span>etronet<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif\">\u2019s returns is explained by market movements, indicating low market dependence and suggesting that returns are largely driven by company-specific factors. The insignificant F-statistic (Significance F = 0.0559) further confirms the weakness of the regression model.
